Visit Grant-Aided Places

We provide grants to help conserve historic places throughout England. These include listed buildings, scheduled monuments and designed landscapes. Many grant-aided places open to the public as a condition of their grant.

The extent of public access varies from one property to another. Some are open throughout the year, some on certain days only, and others provide public access only by prior arrangement. In some cases access may be limited to certain parts of the building or site.

The mill yard and walk around the site is open at all times to the public with no restriction. Entry to the mill and certain events are restricted as explained below. Heritage open week - free to enter over a long weekend for set hours (10am to 4pm). Staff provide guided tours and public are also able to go around themselves in certain areas. School open days - arranged with the individual local schools to come in at a set time for workshops, multiple schools attend over a day, free of charge. Wedding open days - usually on a Sunday in Spring and Autumn, free to enter and visit suppliers who are set up on the events floor with our staff. Makers Market - traders are permitted in the day before to set up or on the morning, open to the public from 10am - 4pm, twice a year (Christmas and spring and summer but has been more previously). The events floor is open for events and to view by appointment only. The Mill Shop is open Wednesday to Sunday for the public to enter and to have a go at weaving. The Torr Vale Tap is open and free to enter from Wednesday to Sunday each week from 10am and can open Monday and or Tuesday for organised events. Staff always present at all events.

Torre Abbey is open 6 days a week, Tuesday to Sunday inclusive from 10.00-17-00. Also open on Bank Holiday Mondays.

The Hall & Gardens are open to the public between Easter and the end of September 5 days a week between 11am and 4pm and for special events during the winter months, we also open during the evenings and on our closed to the public days for private hire events. There is an entry fee to access this part of the estate. Our Courtyard area, behind our Tudor Barn, for which the grant was received to undertake repairs to the sandstone chimney, is open 360 days a year and has no entry fee.

The cottage and winter gardens are open to public viewing for free from 9am to 5pm on weekdays from 15 January to 15 March, without appointment.

The smelt mill structure is available to be viewed from the bottom of the embankment by the public during the opening hours of the business units which share the site. This is generally 8am to 5pm weekdays and 8am to 1pm Saturday. Access onto the consolidated structure (the embankment) itself can be arranged by appointment. There is an interpretation panel in the car park.
