Bolton Castle, Castle Bolton, North Yorkshire

This castle was built in the late 14th century. It was built by John Lewyn, a master mason, for Richard le Scrope. It was already partly constructed in 1378. A contract, dated 1378, survives for the building of the east range. A licence for the crenellation of the castle was granted in 1379. The chapel was dedicated in 1399. Later Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned here from 1568-9.
