Portsea Island Union Workhouse was built on St Mary’s Road between 1843 and 1845. A separate infirmary was built to the west of the main building, and in 1883 separate ‘lunatic wards’ were built at the south-east of the site. The end of the 19th century saw an expansion of hospital buildings at the south of the workhouse site, and the development of an infectious diseases hospital on the east side of Milton Road. The workhouse later became ‘St Mary’s Institution and Hospital’, then simply St Mary’s Hospital. In 1990 the main building of the workhouse was converted into flats known as St Mary’s House. In the early 21st century, much of the former workhouse and hospital site was redeveloped as housing. The hospital continued to operate from the south-east corner of the original site and was known as St Mary’s Community Health Campus.
