An album of 85 pages containing 84 photographic prints and 6 postcards mainly of exteriors of the principal house before repairs. The roofs and balustrade of the hall and wings are particularly well represented. There is also coverage of the domestic buildings and a series of images showing their roofs after a snow fall.
The discovery of the site of Walden Abbey under and close to the north wing of the house is documented in 12 prints, showing the remains of the foundations of the cloister, nave and aisle; steps and in situ tiled floors.
Apart from two pages of postcards at the front of the album, the rest of the coverage is chronological from 1947 to 1963. The postcards date from the 1940s (first page) and 1969 and 1983 (two colour examples on page 2).
Most of the images are by the Ministry of Works from the late 1940s to 1962 with minor coverage by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works from late 1962.
This is part of the Series: OWS01/01 The 'Blue Albums'; within the Collection: OWS01 Office of Works and Successors: Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings
